Gravissimo, inaspettato, dolorosissimo lutto. A 62 anni è morto a New York Gil Scott-Heron, straordinario ed influente musicista, poeta, pioniere dell’hip-hop. Le cause della morte sono ancora da accertare. A darne per primo notizia il suo agente attarverso Twitter: “Just heard the very sad news that my dear friend and one of the most inspiring people I’ve ever met, the great Gil Scott-Heron, died today… Gil Scott-Heron’s death is NOT a rumour. I just called by Dorothy who is staying with Aunt Mimi in NY to tell me the news. I’m so sad.”

Scott-Heron era tornato nel 2010 con il magnifico album ‘I’m New Here’ dopo sedici anni di assenza ed aveva bissato il successo quando ad inizio 2011 aveva dato alle stampe il disco di remix ‘We’re New Here’ realizzato assieme a Jamie XX. “Together throughout the 1970s, Scott-Heron and Jackson made music that reflected the turbulence, uncertainty and increasing pessimism of the times, merging the soul and jazz traditions and drawing on an oral poetry tradition that reached back to the blues and forward to hip-hop. The music sounded by turns angry, defiant and regretful while Scott-Heron’s lyrics possessed a satirical edge that set them apart from the militant soul of contemporaries such as Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield”.
