“I’d say the odds of that happening are 50/50. The first two meetings were great. We talked about the old days and maybe doing something next year. I thought to myself, ‘Oh shit, maybe we could actually do something before we fall down dead.’ It was very positive. The ball is very much in Ray’s court. We used to play tennis, and when I was beating him he’d always develop a strategy. Basically, when I was winning he’d be like, ‘Oh, I hurt my back!’ I’d sort of back off, and then he’d get aggressive again. Then I’d get real angry. He’d smile, and it was really like the Emperor in Star Wars testing Luke’s character. When he got Luke angry, the Emperor would be like ‘Yes! I’ve got you!’”.
E su Mick Avory: “I hope we don’t bring him back. I love him, but it’s water under the bridge. We need new people. Sometimes when you’re with the same old people, you get the same old thing”. E ancora: “I can’t face the concept of days and days in the studio with Ray. I just can’t do it. That said, I really do want to do something with Ray before we both decay and decompose. I said to Ray last week, ‘We don’t have much time left.’ But he didn’t . . . Ray, what an asshole he is”.
Sono passati 9 mesi circa e questa volta è Ray Davies a ritornare prepotentemente sull’argomento: “I met Dave only last week to talk about getting back together again. We’ve also spoken a few times on the phone and emailed. He’s been composing his own songs, but I’d really like to write with him again. We both agree we don’t want to do old stuff or tour with past hits. It’s got to be something new”.
UPDATE – Nuovo materiale all’orizzonte (l’ultimo album è ‘Phobia’ del 1993) e possibile non coinvolgimento di Dave Davies. Il fratello Ray durante un’intervista a Mojo racconta: “Dave’s invited to the party, but if he doesn’t want to do it, [the reunion] will happen anyway. He’s very welcome to turn up if he wants. I’d much rather work with him than without him”. E ancora sul lavoro in studio con Mick Avory: “Yes, it would. I think it’s all down to the music. If somebody can’t or won’t play, there are other players out there. Mick and I want to do it”.
