Dontae Freeman, a spokesman for the Detroit Police Department, said in an interview that at about midnight officers responded at the MGM Grand casino to an apparent suicide of a white man, born July 20, 1964, who was pronounced dead on the scene. He would not confirm the victim’s name; Mr. Cornell’s date of birth is July 20, 1964. Mr. Freeman said that the victim’s wife had called a family friend to check on the man; the family friend forced his way into the man’s room at the casino and found him unresponsive on the bathroom floor. The victim was found with a band around his neck, Mr. Freeman said. The police would not confirm that the victim died of a suicide, though the preliminary determination was an “apparent suicide,” Mr. Freeman said. He added that more details would be released in a statement later Thursday.
To My Sweet Christopher,
You were the best father, husband and son-in-law. Your patience, empathy and love always showed through.
You had always said I saved you, that you wouldn’t be alive if it were not for me. My heart gleamed to see you happy, living and motivated. Excited for life. Doing everything you could to give back. We had the time of our lives in the last decade and I’m sorry, my sweet love, that I did not see what happened to you that night. I’m sorry you were alone, and I know that was not you, my sweet Christopher. Your children know that too, so you can rest in peace.
I’m broken, but I will stand up for you and I will take care of our beautiful babies. I will think of you every minute of every day and I will fight for you. You were right when you said we are soulmates. It has been said that paths that have crossed will cross again, and I know that you will come find me, and I will be here waiting.
I love you more than anyone has ever loved anyone in the history of loving and more than anyone ever will.
Always and forever,
The report states that Cornell, still clothed in his performance t-shirt and jeans, emerged from the Fox Theatre 25 minutes after coming off stage at around 11PM with his Soundgarden bandmates.
The last words Cornell said to fans (though we obviously don’t know what he said after leaving the venue): “Cornell told fans ‘I love you’ as he was escorted from the front of the Fox Theatre from a door near the main box office. He wished them luck, posed for selfie photographs and told some he would see them in Columbus, Ohio – where his band were due to perform Friday night.”
At 11:25PM Soundgarden were escorted out of the Fox Theater after their concert, and they were whisked off together to the MGM Grand Hotel in a mini-bus. The hotel is behind the theatre and less than half-a-mile away.
Just 40 minutes later, security staff forced down the door to his room, and they discovered Cornell’s body on the floor about 12.05am.
Cornell’s Soundgarden bandmates have helped police by agreeing to be interviewed. Police spokesman Michael Woody told DailyMail.com: “We are doing everything to look into this death.”

Red Hot Chili Peppers – [IL TRIBUTO LIVE]
Chris’s death is a loss that escapes words and has created an emptiness in my heart that will never be filled. As everyone who knew him commented, Chris was a devoted father and husband. He was my best friend. His world revolved around his family first and of course, his music, second. He flew home for Mother’s Day to spend time with our family. He flew out mid-day Wednesday, the day of the show, after spending time with the children. When we spoke before the show, we discussed plans for a vacation over Memorial Day and other things we wanted to do. When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different. When he told me he may have taken an extra Ativan or two, I contacted security and asked that they check on him. What happened is inexplicable and I am hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details. I know that he loved our children and he would not hurt them by intentionally taking his own life. The outpouring of love and support from his fans, friends and family means so much more to us than anyone can know. Thank you for that, and for understanding how difficult this is for us.
